Happy Earth Day

Pretty uneventful day so far. I drove in this morning to attend the class I'm taking to refresh my knowledge of the jet. We are reviewing for a test that normally takes people a couple weeks to get through the material for and we'll be taking it after only 5 days of reviewing the material. So I'm not going to write much as I need to get back in the books before too long.

We finished class about and hour early so we all stuck around and did our practice NATOPs homework together, but since I've done it a little more recently than the others, I was going back and helping to refresh their memories on how to do certain stuff. We also talked about a lot of their sea-stories which always help to broaden the horizon of knowledge a bit.

All in all things are good. I'm starting to feel the pressure of coming back to flying again but it is well worth it and I look forward to sharing more good news soon.

As my contribution to Earth Day, I am placing the leftover parts of the strawberries that I ate for lunch out in the compost pile and I will be putting on thick socks instead of using the little space heater to keep my feet warm.

What are YOU doing for Earth Day?

First Day Back

Today was (as the title so boldly puts it) back in the saddle... well, not completely back in the saddle since I am technically still med-down, but I did go to class today as I stated in my last post. we got through what would have taken a regular class 6 hours in about an hour and a half. So I went over to the squadron to take care of some administrative stuff and got picked up for helping out with a Sim tonight... stinks that I'll have to miss part of our small group that we are hosting @ our house this month but I'll come home to catch the last half of it. should be fun to get back in the Sim for an EP (Emergency Procedures) hop for an instructor going back through. Most instructors know me by name now and don't treat me like some useless student who doesn't know anything yet so that's pretty cool. I've also got my appointments set up for medical so I can get back to flying as early as May 5th!

I can't wait!

Visiting Lala @ Work

Yup, the title says it all. I drove in to visit my girl @ work and to bring her a toasted tuna fish sandwich for a small dinner.

Today has been a pretty good day so far. I went to church this morning and was able to say hello to a bunch of local friends. We also celebrated the news of the birth of a new baby for a couple in our small group... really exciting!

After church I drove home to change and grab the shovel because I was off to volunteer near the condo where Lala and I used to live. The community is putting in a garden and our small group is volunteering to work a plot and donate all the fruit and veggies grown there to a food bank. We are still in the early stages if the garden so today we laid out cardboard on top of the tilled ground where we had already placed some kind of lye and other natural fertilizer then on top of the cardboard we placed compost from the city's stash of people's yard waste. The compost was steaming showing us that it was still working so we'll let that sit on top of the cardboard for a week then lay the topsoil down next week so we can begin planting within the next few weeks. lots of fun.

tomorrow I finally get to go in and sit in a class full of Cat-Others (a special Category of higher-up individuals than myself going through the FRS [Fleet Replacement Squadron] that require less training to get qualified in the jet). This basically means I'll be going through a shorter syllabus to get done faster as I've already done the academics portion of the training about a year ago. I'll also start going through the simulator events again on an abbreviated scale so I can get back to flying as soon as I am med-up come May 5th or so. Awesomeness is an understatement for my feelings right now but it will be hard work as I prepare to get myself back in the jet again. I'm expecting long hours and lots of stress for the next few weeks but it'll be well worth it to be back up in the air again.
:-)

New beginnings

I'm posting this from my iPod Touch in hopes of making this easier to do. Also if I use the iTouch (or hopefully later an iPhone) then it'll keep me posting more regularly. I'm using the Lifecast app to type this up and the only drawback is that I can't type in landscape mode. other than that the typing isn't so bad and if I make a mistake 9 times out of 10 the iTouch software recognizes it and corrects the word for me. I guess I'll keep this short for now since I am going to take Lala some late lunch at work. If this posts well then I'll be back later to finish telling y'all about my day.

Acting Touristy and a Picnic at the Park

Yesterday was a good day. My wife and I decided that since we both had the day off we would go for a drive. We lent her nice new camera out to a friend of ours before this decision was made so we made do with my little PowerShot SD850 point-and-shoot. We traversed the area around where she works and after stopping at the local greenery again for some more pictures and a few gifts for others, we found a little "farmer's market" of sorts that has the best ice cream in the area. As you can see from the pictures on her blog, the size of a single dip cone was huge so we each got one. After we finished our ice cream we went and sat at the store my wife works at so I could eat some soup. We also bought a little bag of tea to try out, then we headed home. On the way we decided to stop by Ace Hardware and pick up some potting soil and a pot for the plants we purchased. We played with the idea of a little tennis match between ourselves but ended up going home so I could mow the lawn (almost up to once every five days now) and she could get her plants potted. Before walking out the door to start the mower, I had a revelation for dinner... a picnic at the park. Its more of a beach really... Washington Park has a pebble beach area that we utilized for our small group a few weeks earlier and I thought we could grill out... and since grilling out by yourself isn't as much fun as with others, we called up the same family that had borrowed the camera for the day to see if they'd be interested in joining us. Since they were definitely interested, we worked out the time and details and I proceeded to mow the lawn and rake the clippings up into our compost while my wife went and bought some more pots for her plants. I happened to call her just in time while she was picking these up so she could also grab some firewood and some hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, and chips from the grocery store as well. We even stopped to pick up smores supplies at the store on the way and we found the Easter chocolate bunnies on sale and figured we could definitely use those with our marshmallows and graham crackers. We all arrived at the park within a few minutes of each other and found a place and started the fire up. I don't think any of us had ever really tried to cook with a wood fire before (besides for making smores around the campfire) so we just let the flames die down and used the coals to cook the meat. The other couple brought a delicious little entree that I really can't remember what was in it (without asking my wife first) but I do know that even without the dressing for it, it was scrumdidlyumptous (yes I know this isn't really a word but it best describes how good it tasted). One of their kids fell in a puddle of water so we also were waving his pants above the flames while he sat in a pile of blankets on the beach. It looked like we were fixin' to eat blue jeans. All in all it was a great night and I'm hoping we are able to do it again sometime. I'll try to find a few pictures to post here but like I stated earlier, my wife's blog is the best place to be looking for those. Also, she's been posting them to her flickr account as well as her facebook page so enjoy if you have access.

A bit of editing

I saw in a comment left on my wife's blog that people actually still come here so I figured I better make a better attempt at blogging with Blogger. I've looked high and low for a good app for my iPod Touch that will allow me to blog on there so I don't have to be connected to the Internet to actually spit out my thoughts.

Well I figure I have a lot to catch people up on so here goes. (the short version)

I got kidney stones back in August of 2008 and since then I haven't been able to fly. I normally go in and sit behind the Duty Desk at the squadron but since my surgery I've been doing that a little bit less and getting into the simulator building a little bit more. This is in anticipation for my return to med-up status and the finishing of my FRS orders. I figure I have about a month left (once I am med-up) before I finish my training and will move on to my next squadron.

Today I had off, again. So I have been sitting at home doing a little of this and that. I watched Mad Max 2: Road Warrior on Netflix via my X-Box 360. "Watch Instantly" is nice when you aren't sure what you want to watch, but you want to watch something to pass the time.

I also have been working on my website. I am working with Dreamweaver CS4 and trying to nail the layout down before I decide much more on detailed content.

I have been posting a few things here and there at the subdomain: iweb.nfoav8or.com

If anyone has any suggestions for me, please feel free to leave me a note here. Just remember, I am new to Dreamweaver CS4 so its still kind of a daunting hobby...

Anyways, my wife is almost home from work so I am going to sign off for now; we are heading to the grocery store to pick up food for the next week and then its back home again to make Fettucini Alfredo with cheese-topped freshly-steamed broccoli. Yum.

Later.

Just a few pictures

I've been neglecting to post recently. I've found myself torn on many issues and yet unable to put my words to a blog... so I've been commenting on other blogs and reading the news instead.

Well, I'm back. But tonight's is going to be a short one... I'm simply posting pictures... a few of the greats from the past few days. Lala really knows how to operate the camera... yes, she took them all while I pulled the U-turn just past the bridge to go get them... and lit the candles. :-)

Hope you enjoyed!

Another great day for a CT scan

nope... not a CAT scan, but close. I went in to see the flight doc yesterday and am still med-down anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks yet because they need to make sure my stones are gone. For those who haven't followed or didn't notice the change from my latest blog attempts on my site then switching them back to blogger, I was in the hospital a few times in early August for kidney stones. This posed several problems for the Navy because I cannot fly with stones causing problems. Yesterday I found out there are basically three scenarios now:
  1. The stones have passed and I can go back to flying as normal.
  2. The stone causing problems has passed and the other two they found in the kidneys have stayed up there and I need to get a waiver for the stones and I also need periodic CT scans.
  3. The stones need to be removed.

I'm praying #3 is not the case.

My appointment is in an hour and a half and then I'll need to give more blood and urine samples... but otherwise I'm done.

After my appointment yesterday I stopped by the squadron and let them know what is going on with me and they instructed me on the ways of manning the ODO desk. So for almost the next month I could be doing desk work and simulators and ground events (not that I have too many of those left anyways). I'm anxious for all this to be over with very very soon.

Stupid stones.

Wrong Kind of Buzz?

Reuters.com has a very interesting article labeled: "McCain's Palin Pick: Wrong kind of buzz". They go in and try to make a play on the background of Governor Palin in conjunction with her fired-up acceptance speech. Go here to read the whole article with follow-on comments.

My
favorite comment of them all is the following:

"Many countries governed by powerful women, such as Margaret Thatcher, President Mary McAleese of Ireland, and President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, have raised their children during their time in office, what is the big deal? While watching C-Span this morning, they had an open phone session; the session concerned Sarah Palin's ability to lead and her experience in government. A woman from Atlanta, GA, had brought up the point that she feared Sarah would not have any clout in the Middle East due to the lack of credibility Muslim’s place on women in their society. The reality is, Bangladesh, Turkey, India, and Indonesia are run by women, and coincidentally they all happen to have large Muslim populations. Otherwise, Condoleezza Rice has held audiences with the powers that be in most every Muslim country without a lack of credibility. This argument is as invalid as the circumstances surrounding Palin’s firing Monegan. It is a governor’s prerogative to hire and fire those in her cabinet at her will. These attacks on her character are nothing more than fear mongering. The liberal media has launched an offensive against McCain's vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin. The New York Times suggested Palin wasn't properly vetted. ABC News' Matt Dowd is saying that Republican delegates are turning on Palin. I doubt that very much--it appears that just the opposite is happening--Republicans are rallying around Palin. The perpetrators of these controversies are the liberal media.Let's take a look at the left's bill of particulars against Sarah Palin, gleaned from The New York Times: 1) Her seventeen year-old daughter is pregnant. Even Obama agrees that this is being dwelled on by the media is shameful. It is blight on the credibility and reliability of those who have reported on it. Carolyn Russell and Kate Linthicum of the LA Times are so biased the will not even let you post a comment in their editorials if it goes against the grain of their liberal views . . . this I have experienced first hand. 2) Palin's husband was arrested for DUI 22 years ago. That this is brought up is merely a joke. How many members of Congress have gotten DUIs? And this happened when Mr. Palin was in his early twenties. The liberal left is definitely frightened if they are bringing up issues that old. 3) Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party for two years in the mid-90's, and they support a vote on whether Alaska should secede from the Union. Alaska isn’t New York City or Los Angeles, and the politics there are much different than they are in the lower 48. I can only imagine how those who are truly living on the Last Frontier feel about being bossed around by people like Nancy Pelosi; I’d want to flip the US the bird too. If anything, California should do the US a favor and succeed; I’m certain the notion would get rave reviews from the other 49 states. Nonetheless and ironically, her voter’s registration card was released and this was proven to be just another rumor cooked up by the liberals to stain the reputation of Sarah Palin. 4) Palin has hired a private lawyer to defend her "in an Alaska legislative ethics investigation into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner." (That is another quote from the liberal and biased reporting at the New York Times.) Regardless of all the other misrepresentations made by the deceptions of the liberal media, on the surface this last one appears to be the most serious charge against Palin, but Palin’s firing Monegan because he didn’t fire Wooten, as ALLEGED, it also falls apart even under mild scrutiny. The essence of this matter is that Palin's staff is alleged to have pressured Alaska's Department of Public Safety Commissioner to fire a state trooper, and ultimately fired the Public Safety Commissioner when he did not do so. This state trooper was involved in a nasty custody fight with the Governor's sister. In the first instance this "ethics" investigation is being led by Senator Hollis French, a Democrat and a Massachusetts born, Cornell educated lawyer who advocates socialized medicine. The other thing you won't get from the liberal media is that this Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was appointed by Palin and according to the Anchorage Daily News, "she had a right to fire him for any reason." This will shock you, but that important detail was left out of the Times story. But if this is an investigation into whether Palin abused her power by firing Monegan, as the Times says, the investigation should be over already--she had the legal right to do what she did. Hollis French, as a liberal lawyer, should know this. That the investigation continues shows that it is nothing but a partisan witch hunt. "

...making time

If any of you haven't heard, I'm MARRIED! (must have had your head somewhere else for a while to miss this one...) Decided I better make my presence felt here, even if it is just for a short post. Haven't been online that much to blog... time flies and I just need to get use to catching little moments like these here and there. Hope everyone is doing well in the blogging world.

Note: we are still waiting on more pictures of the wedding to come in so for now all the pictures can be found at Lala, Grammy, and Pop-Pop's blogs. I'll be sure to post a big group shot of the pictures on my site for all to see.

Thanks for all the well-wishes from so many people through the above mentioned blogs as well.

Ciao.

Can't sleep

I find myself unable to sleep tonight. Its tough. I drank a little white wine tonight to ease myself to sleep (just a little... I promise) but no luck. I find myself unable to sleep lately and I think I am starting to figure out why. At first I thought it was because I might be nervous for the wedding this weekend; nervous how my life will be forever changed and that I might not be able to handle it. As time went on, though, I realized this wasn't the case at all. I have been looking forward to this since before I first proposed to Lala last Christmas on the cruise with her family. I've never felt something was so right for me (even with all the things that got messed up along the way, I still felt like the timing was the only issue that needed work).

While Lala was here helping take care of me, we started doing something that I think will forever change our relationship: we read the Bible together before we would sleep. One of us would read selected chapters to the other and then we would discuss it or re-read it to try to find all meaning that was placed there by our Creator. It was an awesome sensation to come to realize that Lala isn't someone who is supposed to complete me (as in a soul-mate) but rather compliment me so that together we might love the Lord more fully. We all see differently through our own eyes but when we are able to sit back and enjoy the love from above, the sensations become overwhelming. This is but a taste of what I have begun to experience with Lala as we would read together.

I know I have a thick skin and more often than not, a thick skull... this sometimes make me put up walls and I jump to conclusions or make myself seem like I understand something when I may not fully comprehend the significance that is presented. The last few times Lala and I read to each other, I have tried to just open myself up to the possibility that I knew nothing about what we were reading beforehand, but rather treat it like it was the first time I was hearing it... and in essence, this turned out to make a world of difference because I was able to hear more clearly a simple nature speaking through the words. I've never slept more peacefully than I have after our readings together.

So, to step down and get back to why I think it is that I am unabe to sleep is simply the preparation for what lays ahead. I want to offer her a life as free from hardship as can be but I know this is unrealistic. I mean, I'm an officer in the United States Navy... hardships will be around every corner. Deployments and workups and refreshers and everything else that can and will keep me from home and from the one I will be devoting my love and life to will tear me apart.

I want this ceremony to be perfect for her... even if it is something small this time around. I know the first attempt we made at this would have been perfect... big, bold, and unforgettable. But this time around I just don't get the same feeling about the ceremony. The meaning is still the same (if not, stronger); the people, while smaller in number, all mean the most to us... and this may be the saving grace with this factor: the people we do have coming have all been good influences in our life together or have all been an unwavering support to us. We know there are many more who we wish could spend the day with us, but we are planning on having receptions back in our respective hometown areas so as to allow us to celebrate with more family members and friends close to us... of course, more information regarding this will come at the necessary times.

Tonight, to help my worried feelings of being unprepared, I've been going through music online and trying to get enough in "stock" for when Lala gets here with her mother so we can all go through the music, etc. I hope it will all help as I really realy do want this to be perfect for her. I've listened to almost all of them (all the way through) and am making playlists to go over later with Lala.

I hope tomorrow is a better day than today in terms of pain. I will be going in to the flight doc as soon as I am able to go long enough off of my prescription Percocet to drive in. Still no signs of the stones passing and I am still experiencing the pain in my lower abdomen and right-hand side at times (most noteably after I am done in the bathroom for 20-30 minutes following). I am also having pains in my jaw now, near my left ear. My body is just being stupid and seeming to want to fall apart on me. Not good timing, Body... not good timing at all. I want to go back to flying and getting qualified. I study during the days so as to keep myself going and not feeling like I am falling too far behind. UGH... we'll see how this all pans out soon.

Ok, well now I feel like I better do a little bit of last minute editing of the playlists and then its off to sleep as I lay here in bed. Thanks for staying awake long enough to finish this. :-) Wish me luck.

Cheers.

Been a long time

So most people don't come here anymore because I use my new website to host my blog. I guess I'm just indecisive when it come to this. I like the ease of use of blogger but it doesn't always give me the options I want for specific instances. I've tried using a few other blog sites but haven't found anything I like quite like blogger. I will be creating a new blog soon using blogger and when I do, I will be redoing my own website to include my blog for ease of use and so more and more people can get to it via the method they've grown accustomed to. I hope this doesn't inconvenience too many people and just hope they see it as me trying to find a way to express myself... which is after all, the real reason for Blogger.com to even exist.

Christmas Leave

So I know its been a while since I've last even looked at blogger. I must not be a true follower of the blogging arts... Well my life has been quite hectic lately. I have been spending most of my time on the base, adjusting to the new squadron, and just getting used to the idea that I get to see my girl in a couple weeks! Now if thats not awesome, I don't know what is.
Today I have off... not really sure why though. I purchased a card reader online so I could use my military ID with my computer and check my squadron's daily schedule from home and thus keeping me from having to drive in just to see the schedule. It helps out a lot now and I'm sure it will come in quite handy in the years ahead too.
I'm not sure how many people will be reading this because of my non-serious blogging ways, but I've read on my Lala's blog about how I recently worked my butt off to negotiate my changing my Christmas leave. The story behind that goes back to when I first checked in to the squadron...
I showed up on the first day and had it on the tip of my tongue so whenever anyone talked about Christmas leave I would immediately point out that I had set dates that I needed off. The set dates having been set up by Lala and myself back in August as I made the long drive from Florida to Georgia, Georgia to Wisconsin, then finally Wisconsin to Washington State. I remember the very spot I made the reservations with Lala: my transition from I-94 in Montana to Hwy 200 in the town of Glendive. We had a "patchy" conversation at this point because cell phone reception wasn't the greatest throughout Montana but we made do. We purchased our tickets through priceline.com. (Later events prove this to become a major ordeal with flight changes and making sure we had seats next to each other... we'll be buying our tickets together from now on, no matter how much I have to shell out.) Back to my checking in to the squadron... As the topic of Christmas leave came up, I immediately interjected the dates I needed off so it was out there. Well, come to find out, the dates they were giving off for leave were in two separate blocks... one before Christmas and another after by a couple days... and as my luck would have it, I was scheduled for the second block along with the other guys that checked in to the squadron when I did. So to make an already long story short, I have been dealing with 4 different people in the squadron trying to get my individual schedule changed so I can go on the cruise with my girl and her family and then enjoy the holidays with her family in New York and my family in Wisconsin... all of which Lala will be with me! :-) Along with getting the dates changed, I also had to make sure the two squadron watches I was scheduled for during my leave time were covered, which now involves favors and covering other people's watches for them. Whew, lots of work. But, come to think of it, none of it seemed like work while I was doing it and it still really doesn't seem like work looking back because of the reason I did it. Being with her on Christmas is what I want the most. Not so much just Christmas... but the "being with her" part.

One more thing... I thought I would pass this on to everyone, just in case... I am planning on moving my blog. The original will stay here on blogger but I think that it will be easier to put my blog on my website where I can edit it while I am offline during the cruise. We'll see when I actually move it, but for now here is the address: http://www.nfoav8or.com. Hope to see you all there and enjoying yourselves.

The man in the monastery...

A guy joins a monastery and takes a vow of silence. He's allowed to say two words every seven years. After the first seven years, the elders bring him in and ask for his two words. "Cold floors," he says. Seven more years pass. They bring him back in and ask for his two words. "Bad food," he says. Seven more years pass. The elders bring him in again for his two words. "I quit," he says. "That's fine," the elders say. "You've done nothing but complain since you got here."
